2014 BEVys: Best Comeback

Next Thursday, we will release the 2014 BEVy Awards. We have had so much fun putting this year’s show together, and have gotten a great deal of support from some of our friends in the Bird-O-Sphere.

The next category for this year’s BEVys is:

Best Orioles Comeback

And the nominees are…

May 26, 2014 – BAL 7, MIL 6

5-26 Hundley RBI

5-26line

After giving up an early 3-2 lead, the Bird’s relied on late-inning heroism from their newest addition. Nick Hundley, the catcher acquired from the Padres in exchange for extra lefty Troy Patton, might not be the offensive presence that Matt Wieters had provided, but for one day, he was good enough. You know what? I’m not doing this justice. Let’s hear a Joe Angel on the WBAL broadcast:

Chris Davis’ struggles had earned him the night off, and everyone knew about it. The “night off” was an attempt to help ease the pressure on him, but also to give the Birds a better chance at “the win column.” The Orioles scored two runs early, but let the lead fall away, as the White Sox poured on runs in the sixth and seventh inning. The O’s climbed back to within one run with a Caleb Joseph home run, and when the Orioles were threatening in the 9th, Buck Showalter went to the bench to find a pinch-hitter for Delmon Young. That’s right: Young, who has done nothing but hit. Davis, who had been struggling mightily.  Davis hit a three-run homer 399 feet into the night sky, and more than the win, O’s fans had every hope that Crush had righted himself, finally. Here’s Joe Angel to tell you about it:

Yup, another improbable comeback in the same series. The Orioles gave up four runs through seven, and stayed quiet until the 8th inning, when things got loud in a hurry. Singles by Hundley and Markakis and a walk by Davis set up Nelson Cruz to tie the game. Depending on the HR hitter to do it when the team needed it the most seemed an impossible thing to ask. Impossible, of course, until it happened. Here’s Joe Angel’s call of the moment on WBAL:

The Orioles would eventually win on a wild pitch, which scored David Lough (who got on base as a pinch runner, go figure). Again, here’s the WBAL call by Jim Hunter:

July 2, 2014 – BAL 6, TEX 4

7-2Fbomb

7-2line

It took a little longer to celebrate this comeback, due to a 98-minute rain delay in the 8th inning. The game did finish, but not without a little Orioles Magic. The O’s found themselves down 4-1 by the fourth, but started the comeback with an Adam Jones home run. They never looked back. The O’s tied the game in the 6th, and capped off the scoring in the 7th with very divergent methods. The unexpected:

And the expected:

It’s tough to pick one (and you know how much I love me some Flaherty) but I have to go w/the Chris Davis PH HR. You know the guy is giving it everything he’s got but it’s just not working for him this season. How can you not pull for him?
