John Lester Trade Talks: Red Sox Fans Are Insane

With the non-waiver trade deadline rapidly approaching, we have officially entered baseball’s Silly Season. This is the time when people check their brains at the door and expect rival baseball organizations to hand over real treasure in exchange for their favorite team’s trash. Fantasy baseball in the worst way.

When it comes to the Orioles, the rumor is that they want starting pitching. Right. A major league baseball team wants good quality pitching. That is earth shattering, isn’t it? The real question (and spoiler alert: NO ONE CAN ANSWER IT FOR SURE) is whether the O’s are prepared to pony up the prospects to acquire real, legitimate pitching, or whether they’re going to shop in the bargain bin to bring in second or third tier talent.

My guess would be the latter. Dan Duquette is going to follow up on his pattern of bringing guys like Joe Saunders, Randy Wolf, and Scott Feldman into the fold. They’re cheap, and they can help. Duquette hasn’t shown the flair for the dramatic that defined Andy MacPhail’s tenure in Baltimore.

One of the big names on the market is John Lester, and the Orioles have been reported as being interested. How interested, again NO ONE CAN ANSWER FOR SURE. What I can say definitively is that there are some Red Sox fans who are out of their damned minds with expectations for such a trade. I’ve said it twice now: none of us know what the Orioles are thinking. But I can guarantee it’s not this.

Enjoy the madness.

I guess, to be fair, I should say that we shouldn’t judge a fan base by its crazies alone – Lord knows we have our share. But this is Pink Hat Nation. I’m not worried about being fair.
