This Week on the Socials

Heston Kjerstad's closest swing path comps using bat speed, swing tilt & attack angle are Austin Slater, Bo Bichette, Tyler Stephenson. Using that trio of stats within a small +/-, 137 balls have been put in play since 2024, with a .229 BA, .429 SLG. baseballsavant.mlb.com/statcast_sea…

the Orioles have some interesting lineup decisions with Cowser and Westburg nearly back. Cowser *was* batting leadoff; now, Holliday is doing well in that role. they also prefer to alternate things by handedness, but Rutschman and Mountcastle haven't hit well for a long time now

After tonight's 3-for-17 performance the Orioles' team batting average with RISP is now .199.

Watching the #Orioles is like seeing a horrific car wreck & paying $80 for the right to stick around to see them pull out the body parts, piece by piece.

Around the Bases

First Base: The Not-quite Medical Wing

Is Adley hurt? Is that the reason he’s not playing up to our expectations? This is a question we are asking ourselves far too often. Adley took a ball off the mask, and we can’t pretend that is an injury that doesn’t matter. But how long will it take him to overcome it? How long do we wait before saying THIS is the real Adley Rutschman?

This is not fun.

Second Base: Are we really excited for Trevor Rogers?

Trevor Rogers made his triumphant return to the rotation, and… yeah, there’s no punchline. He was really good. We have had an ongoing discussion here at Bird’s Eye View about whether he will pitch meaningful innings for the Orioles in 2025, and whether that should be a reason for all-out panic. Obviously, the jury is still out, but so far, so not horrific.

Third Base: Pacifists

The Orioles have no fight in them. It’s not just a matter of a lack of Orioles Magic. When the Orioles get hit, they stay down. It has been a source of unending frustration for O’s fans this season, but has become entirely predictable.

What is it that takes the fight out of an entire 26-man roster? Is this something that can be fixed?

Home Plate: Man vs. Muppet

Brandon Hyde was fired, so our long national nightmare is over. And by that, we mean the conversation as to whether Brandon Hyde should be fired. We’ve beaten the dead horse as to our thoughts on whether Hyde is responsible for the Orioles’ poor play, but it is fair to say that this is the thing that teams do when they are historically bad. And the Orioles are historically bad.

Now that he’s gone, what will the next Orioles manager look like? We step into the lab to try to build the next manager from spare parts, and do everything possible to make ourselves sad. Welcome to the 2025 Orioles.

Fantasy Boss

This is getting silly. Jake wins again, but not in a way that anyone feels good about. The score is 4-1, and Jake has offered to select the next category to try to pick something that won’t be quite as absurd.

This week, the category is xFIP. The guys selected both a starter and a reliever – who did we think would lead each role in xFIP?

Scott selected Zach Efflin and Felix Bautista.

Jake took Trevor Rogers and Andrew Kittredge.

Points will be awarded for each category.

Who will own it?

Blowing the Save

Most podcasts try to end on a high note – the perfect coda to a quality program. That’s just not our style. Each week, we’ll end on a weak note, blowing the save with an item that didn’t quite fit into the episode, or something they simply need to get off their chests. It’s our version of taking the ball and pulling a Kevin Gregg.
