Orioles Fans: Chill Out About Quiet Winter Meetings

Episode 102: Summer Moose

Leading Off

First, we want to apologize to Canada. The last thing we want is an international incident. Baseball’s Winter Meetings usually lead to a flurry of activity, but that flurry rarely includes the Orioles. A polite way of saying it is that the Birds are too “methodical” for such bold action. Still, the Orioles have some business to conduct before the season opens in April, and this is as good a time as any to at least lay the foundation. This week has also provided a little drama with front office personnel. In order to sort it all out, the guys rely on their trusty Drink of the Week, and dive into the comfort of the TWotT (This Week on the Twitters):

Flying the Coop?

DuqJays

Sunday served as an interesting appetizer to the Winter Meetings. Reports (tweets) indicated that the Blue Jays were actively searching to replace their President/CEO, and that Dan Duquette was one of the names linked to the job. Later reports (tweets) indicated that Duquette was interested, but that the Orioles would block any such move.

Duquette lacks an opt out in his six year contract, and the Orioles can block the Blue Jays from seeking an interview. Peter Angelos, when reached, was adamant that he would not release Duquette from the contract.

Since then, reports have softened to the point where it looks like the Blue Jays may hold off on making a change at the top of their organization – at least for another year. Stay tuned, and getcha popcorn ready.

WinterMeetings

With the Winter Meetings in full swing, the Orioles are rumored to be in the market for:

  • LH outfielder/DH
  • bullpen help
  • possibly another starter

You know… like every other club in baseball? Face it, Birdland:  the Orioles never make the sexy move. Don’t be too discouraged.

 Blowing the Save

Most podcasts try to end on a high note – the perfect coda to a quality program. That’s just not our style. Each week, we’ll end on a weak note, blowing the save with an item that didn’t quite fit into the episode, or something they simply need to get off their chests. It’s our version of taking the ball and pulling a Kevin Gregg.
