Episode 142: Peas and Carrots

Leading Off

“Over? Did he say over?” OK… I suppose the fat lady has sung. 2015 has come to a close, and the Orioles stand at .500. This may be a complete failure, based on the standard set by the 2014 AL East Champion team that won 96 games, but you know what? This team finished strong, and for better or worse, they’re our hot mess.

This week’s Drink of the Week was a little different. Scott took the helm, and provided a few doozies – one for each segment. In this episode, we “sample” the following:

  • Balvenie whiskey
  • The Cream
  • The Clear
  • Orange Kool Aid

Note: no livers were harmed in the making of this podcast.

Orioles Superlatives

The final game of the season was pretty emotional. In this “lost” season, the Birds found a way to draw us back, by winning their final five games. As much as our hearts tugged, watching Orioles such as Chris Davis take what could have been their final games in Baltimore uniform… it must have been just as weird for the players.

The clubhouse afterward had an odd vibe… sort of like the last day of school. If that’s the case, we can only hope they got their yearbooks signed. And without further ado, we present our 2015 Orioles Superlatives.

Looking Ahead: Coaching Staff

What do we really know about the effect of Major League coaches, anyway? Well… not a lot. What we do know is that John Russell is the only coach on Buck Showalter’s staff who is a lock to return in 2016. Dan Duquette announced that all will be invited back (does that mean they have been offered a contract?). We take a moment to envision a world without the current slate of coaches, and offer some unsolicited advice.

Fantasy Boss

FB2

Fantasy Boss is our head-to-head fantasy segment where we pick one stat, and select a player. Feel free to play along, and tweet us your #FantasyBoss pick @birdseyeviewbal.

Jake took the 2016 contest. Scott tried a late-season “double or nothing” approach, where his picks – Jonathan Schoop and Manny Machado – would each have to out-homer Jake’s pick – Chris Davis – by season’s end.
Davis, as you know, raked. Jake wins this year, and with that, we’ll retire Fantasy Boss for the off-season. The segment will have a new look in 2016. Come on back and let us know what you think!

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Who had a great week? Who had a tough week? Who made us ashamed to be Orioles fans? Find out in this week’s GB&U. The guys run through their Good, Bad, and Ugly for the week.

Blowing the Save

bubbles

Most podcasts try to end on a high note – the perfect coda to a quality program. That’s just not our style. Each week, we’ll end on a weak note, blowing the save with an item that didn’t quite fit into the episode, or something they simply need to get off their chests. It’s our version of taking the ball and pulling a Kevin Gregg.
