Wild Card Mix Tape

Once upon a time, Bird’s Eye View would use music you recognize to introduce segments.  This was fun for Scott and me – much of the pre-show prep was spent deciding which obscure reference to our subject matter would entertain/annoy our listeners (both of them) the most. It led to far more spirited debate than the team ever did. As I’ve said, this practice is gone, but it doesn’t stop one of us from every now and again saying “hey, do you know what would have been great to play tonight?”

With that, I found myself humming (mostly to Scott’s annoyance) Wild Night by Van Morrison, as we prepped the show tonight, because the word”wild” kept coming up. So, while other blogs and podcasts bring you great content tonight on which starter pitcher should have gone instead of Tillman, or who should be the odd man out in the Wild Card roster, or what the ideal lineup construction against Marcus Stroman is… I’m going to list the best Wild Card pun songs that should have been used in Episode 183.

I feel like I’m doing you a favor. When you’re looking for things to kill time tomorrow, while nervously pacing and trying not to throw up, this at least will give you a soundtrack to get to 8:oopm. Here are a couple tunes for your Wild Card listening pleasure… you know, to fill out your Orioles Wild Card mix tape. Let’s start with the one that got me down this rabbit hole:

Wild Night (1971) – Van Morrison

If you thought of the 1994 John Mellencamp/Me’Shell Ndegeocello cover, I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.  But admittedly, the video is more interesting.

Born to be Wild (1968) – Steppenwolf

Walk on the Wild Side (1972) – Lou Reed

Wild Honey Pie (1968) – The Beatles

OK – even a huge Beatles fan like me can admit that this song sucks, so we’d probably go with a fun take on it like this one. It still wouldn’t save you from a rant about the self indulgence of the White Album, but I digress…

Wild Horses (1971) – Rolling Stones

In fairness to the “Beatles or Stones” question, here’s the Rolling Stones’ entry. But we’d never have played it.

Wild One (1960) – Bobby Rydell

Woof. Scott would have given me “the look,” and  turned it off nearly instantly. He’d be right, of course.

Wild World (1970) – Cat Stevens

Yaaaaaaawn.

Wild, Wild West (1999) – Will Smith

Nope. Big old serving of nope. With a side of nope.

Theme to Wild, Wild West (1965)

Now this is delightfully obscure and obnoxious. This is more our style.

Wild Thing (1965) – The Troggs

This one would have been disqualified for being too obvious, particularly with the Major League connection (NSFW language).

Your Wildest Dreams (1986) – Moody Blues

Ahhhhh, 1980s synth pop.

But clearly, the one  that would have won the day would have been a less direct, more fun approach:

Play That Funky Music (1975) – Wild Cherry

After all, Adam Jones told us it’s a white boy’s sport, right?

If you made it this far into the post, you deserve a medal. Maybe the O’s will reward you with a win tomorrow. What cheesy entries did I miss for your Wild Card Mix Tape?
