Episode 296: Soapboxes

Leading Off

Hi. We hope this episode finds you well – in good health and good spirits.

We keep saying this, but this has been a hell of a week. Baseball seems so trivial in moments like this, but it’s OK to miss it.

Hurry back, baseball. We miss you.

This Week on the Twitters

Here’s what’s going on in the world of Orioles Baseball, in 280 characters, or fewer:

Soapboxes

Remember two weeks ago, when we reminded ourselves how many crazy things happened in 2020 before COVID-19? Well, in the last two weeks, the universe told us to hold its beer.

Since the murder of George Floyd, putting together a podcast about baseball seems trivial. Putting together a podcast about baseball that’s not happening seems even more so. There has never been a greater need for the Baltimorons podcast.

So, while doing our best Baltimorons impression, please excuse us while we dust off our soapboxes…

Actual Baseball

So there is some actual baseball stuff to discuss.

The Draft

The MLB Draft is just around the corner, and it’s expected to be… short. If there’s a consensus pick for the 1/1 selection (Spencer Torkelson), is there a consensus for #2?

We are officially Team Mike, and trust that the Elias will have another strong draft. Or he won’t, and this is all a crapshoot.

The 2020 Season

It’s pretty clear that there will be a 2020 season, the question is what will it look like, and who will burden most of the cost of lost revenues? MLB will not be a $10 billion industry this year. But there is money to be made – will the league and the players be able to hammer something out without it being Pyrrhic?

Also, don’t look now, but we’re winding down the current CBA, and how the 2020 season is handled will surely impact the good or bad feelings between MLB and MLBPA.

Blowing the Save

Most podcasts try to end on a high note – the perfect coda to a quality program. That’s just not our style. Each week, we’ll end on a weak note, blowing the save with an item that didn’t quite fit into the episode, or something they simply need to get off their chests. It’s our version of taking the ball and pulling a Kevin Gregg.
