Episode 323: Kobayashi Maru

Leading Off

We’re back in the present, but looking forward to the future’s release of our past episode. Confused? That makes all of us. Scott and Jake are back in the saddle, and we have a heck of a week of Orioles Baseball to review.

This Week on the Twitters

Kobayashi Maru

Before listening to our very intelligent discussion about Orioles Baseball, you should probably familiarize yourself with the Kobayashi Maru. It’s just… it’s just a thing you should do.

Sufficiently annoyed/enlightened? Great. Well, let us tell you that the Orioles are facing the ultimate no-win scenario. They are trying to build a future winner while avoiding their own fans storming the gates of the Warehouse with pitch forks and torches.

We get the anger. We get the frustration. And we’ve been known to lash out on social media from time to time. But Orioles fandom is eating itself alive, and all for nothing – the Orioles are committed to the path they’re on.

The real point is this: whether the Orioles are palatable to watch now or not, your ability to derive joy from the baseball team is more about you than it is about the baseball team.

There may be no joy in Mudville, but it’s not worth the rage.

Fantasy Boss

Scott won Fantasy Boss two weeks ago, which means tha the contest had narrowed to 5-4. But last week in Scott’s place, Zach Wilt chose dongs (he used the word “dingers,”). Jake went with Cedric Mullins and Zach took Ryan Mountcastle on Scott’s behalf.

That makes Fantasy Boss a dead heat, at 5-5. By rule, Jake should have picked the category, but due to the irregularity of the last/next episode, he chose the category.

This week, the category is which will have a greater number: Orioles wins or dongs from a combination of Mullins, Mountcastle, and Mancini.

Jake picked the Three Musketeers.

That leaves Scott putting the “fantasy” in Fantasy Boss.

Who will own it?

Who had a great week? Who had a tough week? Who made us ashamed to be Orioles fans? Find out in this week’s GB&U. The guys run through their Good, Bad, and Ugly for the week.

Blowing the Save

Most podcasts try to end on a high note – the perfect coda to a quality program. That’s just not our style. Each week, we’ll end on a weak note, blowing the save with an item that didn’t quite fit into the episode, or something they simply need to get off their chests. It’s our version of taking the ball and pulling a Kevin Gregg.
