Episode 344: Hooray Lopez

Leading Off

Welcome back. We assume that you joined us in having our faces melted by six decades of pop/rock, at the hands of a knight of the realm. And while we’re making assumptions, we’re going to assume that you, too, feel that Adley Rutschman should not be as brazen about his facial hair as he is. These are all important baseball thoughts. Welcome to Bird’s Eye View.

This Week on the Twitters

Around the Bases

We go Around the Bases to review this week in Orioles Baseball:

First Base: #TheAdleyRutschmanWatch

This week was certainly better at the plate. We’re not saying “he’s arrived,” I’m simply saying that the rookie is on his way to adjusting to the league.

Second Base: Pitching In

The Orioles’ pitching has been pretty good. And we’re talking a staff that does not have John Means or Grayson Rodriguez. This team has been pretty good in the bullpen, and there is no better evidence than Sunday’s bullpen game.

Third Base: MASN Cup

Baltimore and Washington are at it again, and things feel normal: the Orioles are bad, and the Nationals are worse.

Home Plate: The Orioles are still fun!

The Orioles are in every game that they play. The real difference this year has been the lack of long, protracted losing streaks. So far in June, the Orioles have played .500 ball, and they are “only” 9 games under .500 for the season.

In the Buckle Up Birds era, we missed the team going from BAD to OK to GOOD (they went straight to “improbably excellent). Maybe this is what it looks like to get to “just OK?” And let’s face it: we would take that.

Fantasy Boss

Jake ties things up this week, to bring Fantasy Boss to 2-2 on the season. Last week, Ryan Mountcastle nearly doubled Trey Mancini’s Barrel%.

With that, Jake has selected the (completely absurd) statistic of BABIP for the week.

Scott took Rougned Odor, and Jake went with Anthony Santander.

Who will own it?

Blowing the Save

Most podcasts try to end on a high note – the perfect coda to a quality program. That’s just not our style. Each week, we’ll end on a weak note, blowing the save with an item that didn’t quite fit into the episode, or something they simply need to get off their chests. It’s our version of taking the ball and pulling a Kevin Gregg.
