Episode 375: Unfurled Beeries

Leading Off

This week’s show serves as a mini-reunion of sister-wives, and serves as a reminder that the Orioles are indeed very, very good, and we should maybe just all chill out a little bit.

This Week on the Twitters

Sam Dingman Explains the World

We get a visit from one-half of the first ever guest on Bird’s Eye View when Sam Dingman stops in to chat about his latest project – Sports Explains the World.

Sam and cohost Alan have returned to regular production of Baltimorons, and somehow he has still found time to create a lovely show that Bird’s Eye View listeners should absolutely check out.

We love him, but he has very wrong opinions about British Invasion bands.

Around the Bases

First Base: A date that will live in infamy

September 6th is a great day in Orioles history. 2131, Adam Jones’ defiance in the Cal Statue Game, and oh yeah… some guy named Eddie Murray hit his 500th home run into a bleacher seat.

It’s a great time to be an Orioles fan, but this is an especially good day to be one, as well.

Second Base: Why aren’t more people having fun?

Some fans don’t seem to be having as much fun as we’d expect from a fanbase watching a team win at a .630 clip. We seem to have, in short order, gone from being just happy to be in contention to demanding perfection. Maybe a happy medium? Stress on the happy?

Third Base: DL Hall as a reliever

The Orioles’ most pressing need may have been a bridge to the dominant back end of the bullpen, and then it certainly became the reconstruction of the back end of the bullpen.

Enter DL Hall, who seems to be ready for high-leverage moments during meaningful games in September. Just when the Orioles needed it the most. Who knows if he will remain in the bullpen for the rest of his career – we’re not looking any further than October 2023.

Home Plate: Adley, under the radar

It should not surprise you that Adley Rutschman is good at baseball. But he’s like… really good at baseball. And he’s doing it very quietly. Some of that is certainly due to the rise of Gunnar Henderson and his AL Rookie of the Year campaign. Orioles fans will be forgiven if they look up and say “holy smokes, Adley is doing much better than I expected!”

Fantasy Boss

Scott wins again, and takes a Dolly Parton-esque lead of 9-5. Last week, he correctly predicted that DL Hall (5) would amass more strikeouts as a reliever than Jacob Webb (4).

This week’s category harkens back to Home Plate from Around the Bases: who will have the higher wOBA – Gunnar Henderson or Adley Rutschman. Jake took Adley and Scott went with Gunnar.

In addition, Scott laid down the gauntlet with an additional Wild Card:

Next player to hit a well-off HR

  • Jake selected Adam Frazier
  • Scott took Gunnar Henderson

The other active Wild Card is:

Next Oriole to hit a 450+ foot HR

  • Scott selected Gunnar Henderson
  • Jake took Austin Hays

Who will own it?

Who had a great week? Who had a tough week? Who made us ashamed to be Orioles fans? Find out in this week’s GB&U. The guys run through their Good, Bad, and Ugly for the week.

Blowing the Save

Most podcasts try to end on a high note – the perfect coda to a quality program. That’s just not our style. Each week, we’ll end on a weak note, blowing the save with an item that didn’t quite fit into the episode, or something they simply need to get off their chests. It’s our version of taking the ball and pulling a Kevin Gregg.
