Episode 418: Grade Expectations

Leading Off

After taking a vote, we ended the podcast shutdown, and got down to some very non-essential business. We’re joined by @thedishwasher for a not-so-hard look at the offseason.

Mr. Bluesky

Mike Elias said yesterday the Orioles will be in the mix on the Japanese market. “If you’re an East Coast team, it’s a little bit of a disadvantage. … But I think with Sugano, we’ve demonstrated we can be a destination, and we’re going to keep working on that.”

Paul Tagliabue died. I hope they use his life insurance to build another museum or something. #RestInPiss

I am eager for one of our coaches to do an in-game segment during games like Wayne Kirby did with “What’sCooking with Kirby”My hope is it’s Jason Bourgeois reading passages from Babbit in a segment called, “Rebeling Against Bourgeois”

Around the Bases

First Base: The World Series

In which we begrudgingly agree that the Jays/Dodgers series was entertaining, and good for baseball. Have the Dodgers become Yankees-level problematic?

Second Base: We have a manager

Gigi Albernaz’s dad has been announced the next manager of the Baltimore Orioles. We talk about how bad/ok/good this move is, and what to make of the coaches who have been retained and who have not.

Third Base: Cy Rogers

Speaking of problematic, Trevor Rogers received a single Cy Young Award vote… from a writer who is employed by the Baltimore Orioles. That silliness aside, he had a great partial season, and deserved someone to give him a fifth-place vote. It… just would have been nice to have the call come from outside the house.

Home Plate: The Dead Zone

The only reason that we had anything exciting to talk about here in November is that the team was bad enough season to require a new manager. In the usual Dead Zone space, the Orioles have given us a new holiday ticket package, and some clarity on 2026 promotions.

Grade Expectations

We talk with Nathan Skidmore of The Dishwasher to discuss his excellent post Orioles Offseason Rubric. Nathan looks ahead to what would constitute an A+ offseason, and what would send the team back to repeat a grade.

Check out The Dishwasher, and get involved in the conversation over on Bluesky – @TheDishwasher.

Blowing the Save

Most podcasts try to end on a high note – the perfect coda to a quality program. That’s just not our style. Each week, we’ll end on a weak note, blowing the save with an item that didn’t quite fit into the episode, or something they simply need to get off their chests. It’s our version of taking the ball and pulling a Kevin Gregg.
