Episode 358: Over Under Reactions

Leading Off

Orioles Baseball is back, and we discuss the opening weekend in Boston. There were ups and there were downs, but there was no shortage of interesting things to think about as it relates to the 2023 season. With only three games in the books, we spend time trying to over or under react to what we saw.

Over/Under Reactions

With only three games in the books, it’s hard to get a read on what matters and what doesn’t. That won’t stop us (or anyone else) from jumping to conclusions. As such, we lay out the mat, and decide which of our feels are overreactions to a given set of circumstances, and which are underreactions.

The truth is that neither and both are usually simultaneously true. But why not poke a little fun at ourselves for getting up into our feels after a single series of a 162-game season?

Fantasy Boss

Fantasy Boss makes its 2023 return, as the guys remember how much they love to hate this segment. Based on last year’s results, Jake picked the category, and Scott picked first. Watch out, there’s a WILD CARD in play here in the first week (and beyond?). Here’s hoping that this year’s Fantasy Boss contest is weird and entertaining.

This week, the category is an over/under on Jorge Mateo’s K% at 15%. Last week, he surprised us at 10% – what, if anything, does that tell us?

Scott took the over, and Jake took the under.

Who will own it?

But wait! There is a WILD CARD in place. Jake asked which Orioles starter would be the first to pitch through 7 innings. Scott took Kyle Gibson and Jake took Dean Kremer. Whichever pick clicks first will award the corresponding BEV host with a WILD CARD Fantasy Boss point.

Who had a great week? Who had a tough week? Who made us ashamed to be Orioles fans? Find out in this week’s GB&U. The guys run through their Good, Bad, and Ugly for the week.

Blowing the Save

Most podcasts try to end on a high note – the perfect coda to a quality program. That’s just not our style. Each week, we’ll end on a weak note, blowing the save with an item that didn’t quite fit into the episode, or something they simply need to get off their chests. It’s our version of taking the ball and pulling a Kevin Gregg.

Episode 357: Battle Bots

Leading Off

Spring Training is almost at a merciful end. The 2023 season is right around the corner, and we can finally put what has been a boring and disappointing offseason in the rearview mirror.

In the calm before that storm, we take our cues from recent Orioles Twitter happenings, and explore how we might automate ourselves away.

Bold Predictions

As with every season, we get things started by making wild guesses… er, making bold predictions – some in earnest and some facetious. OK, it’s us… many of them are facetious.

Feel free to send us your own Bold Prediction @birdseyeviewbal. Bonus points if they make you both excited about the season, and a little sad. We’re Orioles fans – we are complicated creatures.

Rise of the Machines

We gaze into the upcoming technological singularity and see how the ChatGPT language model might talk about the Baltimore Orioles. Who knows, maybe AI will produce all future Bird’s Eye View content – there has to be SOME intelligence involved.

We ask our “guest” about possible scenarios for the 2023 season that become increasingly less rooted in reality. Please ask ChatGPT to create some narrative around the most ridiculous Orioles scenarios you can find, and share with us.

Around the Bases

First Base: Rules in Action

We have complained about some of the new MLB rules for 2023, but now we are starting to see the rules play out in actual baseball games (rather than in theory). So… how good/bad are these rule changes?

Put yourself on the clock and get shiftfaced with us, as we see where the rubber meets the rules.

Second Base: World Baseball Classic

The WBC is back, and we are fans of the tournament.

Of particular interest, we’re looking forward to seeing what the Czech Republic (Czechia) has to offer. Also, team USA might not be The Dream Team, but they are an exciting group of players.

The Dominican Republic also looks completely stacked. Do yourself a favor and watch some WBC games this winter/spring.

Third Base: Spring Training So Far

We’ve seen so little… so what can we say about what we have not yet seen?

Home Plate: Adieu Adieu

With Dempsey’s closing at the ballpark, what should the Orioles do with that space? We have one immediate thought for the new use for this space.

Truth or Truth

We rip off late night comedy bits and dive back into an old favorite, as we play an intense version of Truth or Truth. It’s a good thing, because we’re in the most truthful shape of our lives.

Around the Bases

We go Around the Bases to review this week in Orioles Baseball:

First Base: Wild Card Watch

We provide an update on the Orioles’ Wild Card prospects… with a bit of editorialization.

Second Base: 5th Starter

Austin Voth made an appearance in the bullpen this week, which makes us wonder if the rotation is in flux, when it comes to the fifth starter. The O’s have their best three (Lyles, Bradish, Kremer) lined up for the Toronto series. But… do they have any other options for the fifth starter? And might that person own a gas can?

Third Base: Mortal Traits

Adley Rutschman is human, after all. Just ask left-handed pitchers. We talk about whether this is something to lose sleep over, or whether this will round out in the end.

We expand the conversation to cover Cedric Mullins, and his recent struggles against left handed pitching. After switching away from being a switch hitter, and regressing from an all-world career year, what is going on with him and lefties? And will it ever get better?

Home Plate: O’s Media Notes

Last week, Jake whined about the ALL NEW MASN APP. But have you heard us whine about the radio? What about AppleTV?

The media landscape is changing. Who will adapt better: the Orioles, or their fans?

Are You Ready for Some Football (Talk)?

The Baltimore Ravens had our full attention this week, with their exciting Week 1 victory over the NYJ, complete with a reunion with a very elite old friend.

But the Ravens’ ongoing negotiations with Lamar Jackson have us thinking about the Orioles’ upcoming contract negotiations with the next crop of talent. Will they handle this better than they handled Machado? Can they avoid giving away franchise record-setting money to the wrong people (a la Chris Davis)?

Fantasy Boss

The score tightens to 5-4, as Jake came roaring back with a 1-0 dong victory.

This week, the guys expand on their Mortal Trait discussion, and consider the OPS of Cedric Mullins and Adley Rutschman against their weak-side competition. Will Adley out-OPS Cedric against lefties?

Scott took Cedric, Jake gets Adley.

Who will own it?

Episode 340: Chains Above Replacement

Leading Off

After a quick trip to the 10-day IL, Bird’s Eye View is back. And what a week it has been! Don’t look now, but the Orioles have been an entirely watchable team. We’re not in Buckle Up Birds territory here, but there are some surprises in store for us in 2022.

The Baseball Widows

It’s our favorite episode of the year: the annual Mother’s Day visit from the Baseball Widows.

The podcast goes into its throw-back pricing, and looks back to 1992, with an assist from our wives and our resident third grader.

Truth or Truth?

Sometimes the truth hurts. Sometimes watching the Orioles hurts. And sometimes the truth will set us free.

But this time, we dig down deep to reveal our own truths on various topics from around Birdland.

Fantasy Boss

A Bird’s Eye View staple returns, as we dust off the Fantasy Boss segment.

This week, we start off with the obvious: dongs. The question is actually which Orioles hitter will have the highest Chains Above Replacement value (CAR).

Scott went with Cedric Mullins

Jake took Ryan Mountcastle

Who will own it?
