Around the Bases

First Base: How Fun Is This?

Pinch us. Are we dreaming? Nah. It’s just fun baseball again. We talk about the joys of watching a fun Baseball Team.

Second Base: Yeah…but…

Things are orange colored kool-aid, but there are a few things that have us worried. How worried should we be?

Third Base: Norfolk Shuttle 2.0

We have seen the Orioles tap into their 40 man roster a bit differently this past week. We examine what that means and if we expect to see it continue.

Home Plate: Las Vegas Joy Thieves

It’s hard not to feel bad for Oakland fans. We reflect on those issues on the West Coast and put it in perspective as an Orioles fan with our current ownership.

Fantasy Boss

Scott wins again and increases his lead to 4-0, continuing his Fantasy Boss shutout.

This week, we selected Dongs.

Jake took Ryan Mountcastle, whereas Scott takes Adley.

Blowing the Save

Most podcasts try to end on a high note – the perfect coda to a quality program. That’s just not our style. Each week, we’ll end on a weak note, blowing the save with an item that didn’t quite fit into the episode, or something they simply need to get off their chests. It’s our version of taking the ball and pulling a Kevin Gregg.

Episode 361: Pyrite Booty

Leading Off

With Scott out for another week, Matt Taylor slides into the guest host seat, and as usual Jake can’t control the length of this episode. We’d apologize, but we’re not sorry.

This Week on the Twitters

Conspiracy Theory Theatre

The popular program Conspiracy Theory Theatre takes a break from its usual programming to take a look into the world of Orioles Baseball.

Relax, we’re just having fun. Except for that last part, which we’re totally serious about.

Around the Bases

First Base: The Crowded Infield

How do you solve a problem like Mateo? After we asked “is Jorge Mateo or real?” last week, we find ourselves this week wondering how soon the time will come when he has reached max trade value potential. Is it a fait accompli? Is there room for Mateo and the Infield Cavalry on the next great Orioles roster?

Second Base: Pyrite Booty

Are the Orioles GOOD, or are they just BETTER THAN BAD? These are the questions that try fans’ souls.

Third Base: History, but in a good way

Matt Taylor’s blog, Roar From 34 is all about History, Humor, and Homerism. We have seen our fair share of history happen TO the Baltimore Orioles. The team recently got through a game without the lineup recording a strikeout – for the first time since 2010!

If the Orioles are going to be better (and it looks that way…), what else might we see?

Home Plate: Follow the bouncing ball of expectations.

They’re good / they’re bad.

We don’t want to lose 100 games / we want to win 81 games / we want to make the playoffs.

As the team moves forward, we – the fans, keep moving the goalposts. And… that’s ok?

Fantasy Boss

Scott opens his lead to 3-0, continuing his Fantasy Boss shutout. He clicked on the Dong Bong question, but last week’s category (which batter will have more 100.0+ mph exit velocity) was a push. Both Jake’s pick (Santander) and Ryan Blake’s – on behalf of Scott – (Henderson) had three.

This week, in Scott’s place Matt Taylor selected the innings pitched by a reliever.

Jake took Brian Baker, whereas Matt took Yennier Cano, for Scott.

Episode 360: Pretty OK

Leading Off

The Orioles had the kind of week that made Scott flee the country, and in the meantime, friend of the show Ryan Blake was kind enough to step up to guest hosting duties. We’re sure that the BEV pitiful performance in Orioles Family Feud won’t come up. Not at all.

Around the Bases

First Base: The Pitching

Look, the pitching has not been… it has not been good. Whether you’re starting about the starters or relievers. Whether you’re talking about new acquisitions or returning players. There are simply very few pitchers for the Baltimore Orioles who have not been weapons-grade terrible for this early start to the 2023 season. We talk about whether things are as bad as they look, and if not/so, whether they might improve.

Second Base: Is Jorge Mateo for real?

Jorge Mateo is entertaining to watch – a player whose defense and speed makes him electric on the ballfield. If only he could get on base often enough to make that incredibly entertaining. What’s that you say? HE IS GETTING ON BASE? Well, consider us entertained.

Third Base: Heston Kjerstad is too good

Kjerstad is definitely too good for AA Bowie. It is only a matter of time before he gets a promotion to Norfolk, and guest host Ryan Blake says it’s not out of the question that Kjerstad could be patrolling the outfield in Baltimore, come September. If this is a problem, it’s a great problem to have.

Home Plate: Is everything… OK

With the very prominent pitching woes

Fantasy Boss

OK, this is a weird one. Scott offered Jake additional time, and he might be taking it. Neither Jake nor Ryan could determine whether the Dong Bong had been out in Chicago, and so the question is this: is the Dong Bong a home-only affair? It looks like we’re going to need more time to see whether Scott can take his early lead to 3-0. We’re calling this one incomplete.

In Scott’s stead, Ryan selected 100+ mph exit velocity.

Jake took Anthony Santander (for reasons?), whereas Ryan took Gunnar Henderson, for Scott.

Episode 358: Over Under Reactions

Leading Off

Orioles Baseball is back, and we discuss the opening weekend in Boston. There were ups and there were downs, but there was no shortage of interesting things to think about as it relates to the 2023 season. With only three games in the books, we spend time trying to over or under react to what we saw.

Over/Under Reactions

With only three games in the books, it’s hard to get a read on what matters and what doesn’t. That won’t stop us (or anyone else) from jumping to conclusions. As such, we lay out the mat, and decide which of our feels are overreactions to a given set of circumstances, and which are underreactions.

The truth is that neither and both are usually simultaneously true. But why not poke a little fun at ourselves for getting up into our feels after a single series of a 162-game season?

Fantasy Boss

Fantasy Boss makes its 2023 return, as the guys remember how much they love to hate this segment. Based on last year’s results, Jake picked the category, and Scott picked first. Watch out, there’s a WILD CARD in play here in the first week (and beyond?). Here’s hoping that this year’s Fantasy Boss contest is weird and entertaining.

This week, the category is an over/under on Jorge Mateo’s K% at 15%. Last week, he surprised us at 10% – what, if anything, does that tell us?

Scott took the over, and Jake took the under.

Who will own it?

But wait! There is a WILD CARD in place. Jake asked which Orioles starter would be the first to pitch through 7 innings. Scott took Kyle Gibson and Jake took Dean Kremer. Whichever pick clicks first will award the corresponding BEV host with a WILD CARD Fantasy Boss point.

Who had a great week? Who had a tough week? Who made us ashamed to be Orioles fans? Find out in this week’s GB&U. The guys run through their Good, Bad, and Ugly for the week.

Episode 353: Liftoff

Leading Off

It’s over. But though the Orioles season has gone gently into that good night, we won’t stop appreciating the excellent – and unexpected – baseball we were so privileged to watch.

Around the Bases

We go Around the Bases to review this week in Orioles Baseball:

First Base: Let the emotions flow

Now that the season is over, we talk about how it makes us feel. We sift through how we feel about the status of the rebuild, and pick out a few favorite memories from an unexpectedly fun 2022 season.

Second Base: Awards Season

Let’s not be coy: Should Brandon Hyde be the AL Manager of the Year? Does Adley Rutschman have legit AL Rookie of the Year credentials?

Third Base: Friends and Foes bounced out of the Wild Card round

Friends: Pads and Mets

Foes: Jays and Rays(?)

Home Plate: Project Liftoff

We’ve asked in previous episodes what “liftoff” means, in terms of the 2023 offseason. We get more specific about what we’re looking for, and what we consider a successful season.

In short, it’s playoffs or bust, an we have a hefty shopping list.

Fantasy Boss

We have a winner! Although, nobody seemed to know.

Jake won Fantasy Boss 2022 by correctly taking the under for runs scored. But… he spent the entire week thinking he had lost, until Scott reminded him of who had picked what. We’re all about the details, here.

This was a close contest, and despite a BEVy of guest hosts trying to stir the pot, we have our winner. Jake will add another notch to his Fantasy Boss championship belt, and Scott will wonder again why we engage in this stupid segment.

See you next season, FB!

This Week on the Twitters

Around the Bases

We go Around the Bases to review this week in Orioles Baseball:

First Base: Is there something in the water?

Orioles starting pitching has been incredible this week. If you thought Jordan Lyles was impressive, then you should have seen Kyle Bradish. Not impressed by Kyle Bradish? You should have seen Dean Kremer. Starting pitching was exciting this week.

Second Base: What is it about Detroit?

Why do the 2022 Tigers have the 2022 Orioles’ number? s there something about this particular team that explains why they dominate the O’s, or is this a bit of weird small sample size business?

Third Base: Say Something Nice

We’ve said the season is (competitively) over. We’ve said a lot of things. But we don’t want to be confused for being negative. So we go out of our way to say some nice things about the Orioles:

  • Jorge Mateo is truly special
  • Gunnar Henderson has been better than advertized
  • Adley Rutschman doesn’t even look like a rookie
  • Pitching we weren’t planning on has been fantastic
  • Rookies (Stowers and Vavra) have made an impact, recently

Home Plate: Does Fort McHenry still overlook Baltimore Harbor?

The Angelos family has reportedly hired Goldman Saks to help assess the market for a potential sale of the franchise.

Do we… think this will happen? Is this bad? Does a sale necessarily mean a relocation? Can you find Nashville on a map?

Experiences at the Yard

Scott and Jake went to separate games at OPACY this week, and we’re dying to talk about them. Is there anything better than seeing the Orioles play meaningful baseball at the stadium that forever changed baseball?

Fantasy Boss

Jake ties the score at 5-5! Fantasy boss gets just as tight as the AL Wild Card race. OK, it’s tighter, but Orioles’ fans have to pretend.

Jake’s pick (Adley Rutschman) out OPS’d Scott’s pick (Cedric Mullins) in their at bats against LHP.

With the 2022 Fantasy Boss title in the balance, the guys go with a high-minded stat: will the Orioles have a positive or negative run differential in their remaining schedule?

Jake took the negative, whereas Scott was left with the positive.

What happens if it’s tied? The guys agreed on a tie-breaker of DONGS – Jake took Gunnar Henderson and Scott took Ryan Mountcastle.

If it’s tied after that… we don’t know. Maybe we’ll resort to a coin-flip.

Who will own it?
