This Week on the Twitters

Around the Bases

We go Around the Bases to review this week in Orioles Baseball:

First Base: Wild Card Watch

We provide an update on the Orioles’ Wild Card prospects… with a bit of editorialization.

Second Base: 5th Starter

Austin Voth made an appearance in the bullpen this week, which makes us wonder if the rotation is in flux, when it comes to the fifth starter. The O’s have their best three (Lyles, Bradish, Kremer) lined up for the Toronto series. But… do they have any other options for the fifth starter? And might that person own a gas can?

Third Base: Mortal Traits

Adley Rutschman is human, after all. Just ask left-handed pitchers. We talk about whether this is something to lose sleep over, or whether this will round out in the end.

We expand the conversation to cover Cedric Mullins, and his recent struggles against left handed pitching. After switching away from being a switch hitter, and regressing from an all-world career year, what is going on with him and lefties? And will it ever get better?

Home Plate: O’s Media Notes

Last week, Jake whined about the ALL NEW MASN APP. But have you heard us whine about the radio? What about AppleTV?

The media landscape is changing. Who will adapt better: the Orioles, or their fans?

Are You Ready for Some Football (Talk)?

The Baltimore Ravens had our full attention this week, with their exciting Week 1 victory over the NYJ, complete with a reunion with a very elite old friend.

But the Ravens’ ongoing negotiations with Lamar Jackson have us thinking about the Orioles’ upcoming contract negotiations with the next crop of talent. Will they handle this better than they handled Machado? Can they avoid giving away franchise record-setting money to the wrong people (a la Chris Davis)?

Fantasy Boss

The score tightens to 5-4, as Jake came roaring back with a 1-0 dong victory.

This week, the guys expand on their Mortal Trait discussion, and consider the OPS of Cedric Mullins and Adley Rutschman against their weak-side competition. Will Adley out-OPS Cedric against lefties?

Scott took Cedric, Jake gets Adley.

Who will own it?

Blowing the Save

Most podcasts try to end on a high note – the perfect coda to a quality program. That’s just not our style. Each week, we’ll end on a weak note, blowing the save with an item that didn’t quite fit into the episode, or something they simply need to get off their chests. It’s our version of taking the ball and pulling a Kevin Gregg.

Episode 350: Eh OK

Leading Off

We get together on an off-day after one of the more disappointing series in recent Orioles history. But, hey: at least you get both BEV hosts in this one?

This Week on the Twitters

Is it Over?

Let’s not beat around the bush: the Orioles had the opportunity to leapfrog the Toronto Blue Jays in the AL Wild Card race. Instead, they ended the series 4.5 games out.

So, when it comes to playoff chances… is it over for the Baltimore Orioles?

Around the Bases

We go Around the Bases to review this week in Orioles Baseball:

First Base: What would it take?

The Orioles and the Jays had a pretend push-fight this week. And then Jays fans got a little spicy on the internet. But what would it take for Baltimore/Toronto to turn into a real rivalry? It takes good teams and a heightened emotions – but is that enough?

Second Base: Minor Labor Battles

The MLBPA is going to represent Minor League baseball players. Whereas this is a decidedly Good Thing (TM), there will be a cost. And if big businesses (like the $10B behemoth that is MLB) know one thing, it’s how to pass additional costs onto their consumers.

So what is it going to cost fans like you and me to get minor league baseball players treated like people?

Third Base: The Shell Game

The Orioles are making moves. 26 roster moves since September 1, at the very least. So what stands out as meaningful or weird?

Home Plate: About the offense…

The Orioles would like to score more runs. But where is that going to come from? We look at the regulars and ask ourselves who has to go (and be replaced) in order for the team to be more productive in the box score.

Fantasy Boss

Scott took this week, and stretches his lead to 5-3. Guest host Alan Smith tried his best to screw Scott, but Jake wasn’t having it. Dummy.

Scott went back to DONGS.

Jake took Ryan Mountcastle, and Scott went with Anthony Santander.

Who will own it?

Episode 348: Reunited And It Feels So Good

Leading Off

Jake and Scott are back together this week, so they spend considerable time and energy trying to figure out how to podcast. Also, the Orioles are still good (better than they should be?), and fun to watch.

Around the Bases

We go Around the Bases to review this week in Orioles Baseball:

First Base: Do we have an offensive problem?

Look, we are NOT saying that the Orioles are bad, or that the Orioles offense hasn’t been impressive. But we are starting to wonder if some cracks are appearing that reveal the Orioles offense for what it is: a squad playing over its head, being held up by its supporting cast greatly exceeding their peripherals.

Maybe we’re way off (first) base, here. But it smells like the Orioles offense is not as good as it has been.

Second Base: Debuts

We talk about what we saw in DL Hall’s MLB debut, and we discuss whether we will see any more meaningful MLB debuts in the 2022 season.

The guys are firmly on Team Bring Up Gunnar, but also aggressively Team Don’t Be a Dick About It on Social Media.

Third Base: In or Out?

We often ask the question “will this guy have a role on the next great Orioles team?” So we took a look at the edge of the roster and made some observations about:

  • Jorge Mateo
  • Ryan McKenna
  • Jordan Lyles
  • Spenser Watkins
  • Dean Kremer
  • Ramon Urias

Home Plate: Do you believe in magic?

In any other episode, this would clearly be a Lovin’ Spoonful. But here on this episode, we’re asking if you take Mike Elias seriously when he says that this upcoming offseason is “liftoff.” Is he for real? Is the team really going to invest at the major league level to try to win in 2023?

The team’s options are pretty clear. The can:

  • Go all in – big trades and big purchases
  • Hedge their bets – modest trades and modest purchases
  • Extend the rebuild – anemic spending and no real trades

Door #3 would be absolute fan relation suicide. It’s not that we put it past them, but the real question becomes whether you believe that they will go all in, or hedge their bets.

So… do you believe in magic?

Fantasy Boss

The score stays at 4-2 in Scott’s favor. Jake won the most recent Fantasy Boss, but waived off the win, feeling that he had allowed Jabby Burns to “tarnish the integrity” of Fantasy Boss.

Instead, Jake has chosen an over/under of his own: Anthony Santander at 100 wRC+

Scott took the over, and Jake is left with the under.

Who will own it?

Episode 345: A Matter of Perspective

Leading Off

The Orioles have had their first taste of winning in five years, and sources tell us it tastes pretty good. Enjoy the baseball, but enjoy it… responsibly.

Around the Bases

We go Around the Bases to review this week in Orioles Baseball:

First Base: Are these the good old days?

Jake wonders aloud if the stakes of a mediocre team, combined with a hot stretch of baseball makes these “the good old days.” Somewhere between the games not being consequential and living/dying with every game is now… is now the good old days?

Second Base: The Jorge Lopez Experience

Jorge Lopez was great. Then he had a rough week. Now what? Scott urges that we all hold it together – it’ll be fine.

Third Base: Trade Deadline

The trade deadline is looming, and we review the obvious trade candidates, and maybe-not-so-obvious outcomes.

Home Plate: A Matter of Perspective

Listen, Birdland: get yourselves together. In order to get the most out of these games, you have to approach a season like 2022 with a little perspective. The fan base may have forgotten that, which may be expected after five years in the wilderness.

Keep calm and root for the Orioles.

Fantasy Boss

Scott takes a 3-2 lead, as his pick (Rougned Odor) out BABIPed Anthony Santander.

This week, Scott selected Wins Probability Added (WPA).

Jake selected Cionel Perez, and Scott went with Adley Rutschman.
