Episode 274: Heating Up

–                          –                          –

Leading Off

No, the Orioles aren’t getting hot, it’s everything else. Literally everything else is on fire right no, because of the weather. But the Orioles did have a good series against the Red Sox, so we’ll say it’s that. Because… why not?

This Weekend Didn’t Suck

Don’t say we never say anything nice about the Orioles. This weekend was not terrible, and we tell you all about it. Consider the following:

  • The Orioles took 2 of 3 from the Boston Red Sox
    • No one died of heat stroke
    • We instantly won the Cashner trade
    • The O’s put 11 runs on the Red Sox
    • They responded to a 17-6 thrashing with a gem
    • Asher Wojciechowski had a good game
    • Stevie Wilkerson might be our best reliever
  • The HOF Weekend had some nice Maryland moments
    • Harold Baines loves St. Michaels, MD
    • Mike Mussina said nice things about being with the Orioles
  • Adley Rutschman hit his first professional HR, and there is video. It’s real, and it is spectacular.
  • Keon Broxton has been DFA’d
    • All hail our new CFers – Stevie Wilkerson and Anthony Santander

Alex Fast, of Pitcher List

We discuss the key issues of the day, in regard to Orioles Baseball, with Alex Fast of Pitcher List. Alex knows how to navigate a Bealtes vs. Stones question, but also has a ton of insight as to what this front office has to offer, and how it stacks up with the rest of the league. Follow Alex on Twitter @alexfast8, and check out his work behind the mic at pitcherlist.com.

Fantasy Boss

Scott is on the comeback trail, having correctly predicted that Renato Nunez would out-RBI Hanser Alberto. This brings the score to 7-4-1.

This weeks category is strikeouts. Scott selected Mychal Givens and Jake picked Jimmy Yacabonis.

Blowing the Save

Most podcasts try to end on a high note – the perfect coda to a quality program. That’s just not our style. Each week, we’ll end on a weak note, blowing the save with an item that didn’t quite fit into the episode, or something they simply need to get off their chests. It’s our version of taking the ball and pulling a Kevin Gregg.

Episode 273: Cash Considerations

–                          –                          –

Leading Off

Don’t look now, but we’re like… podcasting regularly again. Sounds like an ideal time for a break, right? Just kidding (mostly) – these games can be exhausting. Since the All-Star Game, the Orioles have flirted with history, and shown the baseball world that they could live up to the laughably low expectations they garnered, entering the season.

That’s the Magic of 2019 Orioles Baseball!!!

This Week on the Twitters

Here is what is happening in the world of Orioles Baseball, in 280 characters, or fewer:

Cash Considerations

The Orioles traded Andrew Cashner, and we’re determined to tell you how you should feel about it. We’ll tell you, of course, directly after we determine how WE are supposed to feel about it.

Cashner was clearly one of the better trading chips the Orioles had, but did they get enough in return? The Red Sox have said so, but was that merely lip service? Also, why in the world would we think we could get any more?

Lastly, what can we expect between now and the trade deadline? Will there be any other Birds leaving the nest?

Fantasy Boss

Jake wins again, having correctly predicted that John Means wouldn’t see the light of day in the Mid-Summer Classic. That brings the score to a “commanding” (Scott’s words) 7-3-1 lead. Look out, Birdland, there may be Wild Cards invoked at some point.

This week’s category is RBI – Jake picked (The Committee for) Hanser Alberto and Scott selected Renato Nunez.

Episode 272: Dialing Aberdeen

–                          –                          –

Leading Off

Oh hey, we have a podcast! After weeks of vacation, we return to the microphones, and to the absurdity that is Bird’s Eye View. Strap in, listesners – this one was self-referential, prone to tangents, and surprisingly chipper considering that we’re talking about a 27-62 baseball team.

Around the Bases

It’s been a while, so we get back in the saddle with a little podcasting comfort food: an Around the Bases for the week that was in Orioles Baseball:

First Base: Legitimately Good Things!

In 2019, we have had to generate a fair amount of excitement, and spread our fandom pretty thin. But over the past couple of weeks, there have been a number of good things Birdland. Here’s a rundown:

  • Offensive explosion in Cleveland
  • Series win against the Blue Jays
  • Draft – soooo many picks have signed
  • J2 Draft – we… actually did stuff, and stuff
  • Givens Play
  • Adley Rutschman (et al) to Aberdeen

Second Base: OK, but really… Anthony Santander?

Jake asks (for the millionth time) as to whether Anthony Santander can possibly be a useful MLB player. Spoiler alert, everyone is going to be disappointed by the result.

Third Base: Fun Stories, Tom Eshelman Edition

Jake recounts his emotional roller coaster, watching Tom Eshelman pitching, including the shame of being dunked on by Jim Palmer on Twitter.

Home Plate: Mea Culpa

Scott gets emotional, Jake fails to get analytical. As “things get weird on Bird’s Eye View” goes, it’s pretty tame. But… YMMV.

Fantasy Boss

Jake won this past week for out-Dongs-After-Darking Scott (Jonathan Villar vs. Hanser Alberto), and takes the lead by a score of 6-3-1. Scott chose a very simple category for this week’s shortened Fantasy Boss:

TRUE OR FALSE: John Means will make an appearance in the 2019 All-Star Game.

After reminding himself that Cito Gaston is still alive, and that MLB is not yet satisfied with the amount of MASN money the team is paying out to the Nationals, Jake took FALSE, so Scott was left with TRUE.
